La Vergne Opens Its First Skate Park at Veterans Memorial Park

Finally‚ skateboarders in La Vergne don’t have to resort to shopping center parking lots to fine-tune their skateboarding skills.

In April 2006‚ the city opened a new $40‚000 skate park at Veterans Memorial Park.

“It’s been a really positive addition to our city‚” says Robin Grubb‚ director of parks and recreation for the city of La Vergne. “People are using it all the time. Parents are glad to have a place for kids to skate so they aren’t riding out in the streets. It’s a safe place for kids to skate and hang out.”

The skate park‚ part of the city’s master plan that was laid out in 2003‚ was initially scheduled to be built a few years down the road. But the city council decided to move the construction up because so many kids were skating around in local shopping center parking lots.

“We might expand the skate park later on‚ but we just wanted to get something built for the kids‚” Grubb says.

The skate park is a modular setup with street-skating features such as a half pipe‚ stairs‚ grind bars and a picnic table skaters can actually skate on.

“It was designed for all skill levels‚” Grubb says. “Beginners can enjoy it as much as advanced skaters.”

The city of La Vergne funded the skate park with the help of Metro Ready Mix‚ a local concrete company that donated a portion of the concrete‚ and Affordable Concrete‚ which gave the city a discount on the labor.

Admission to the skate park is free‚ and it is open daily from dawn until dusk.
